Case study: Dave and Rhonda

Dave needs some coaching on how to communicate when dealing with his internal clients. Set up some meeting time and explain to him what's been going on, and explain why the e-mails he sent would be unclear to people in another group. Define what good communication looks like, and set up a communication plan with him so that he has clear steps to follow in communicating with others. (This could be a schedule according to which he will update them and specific points of information that he will provide.) Schedule a few regular appointments to see how things are going and to ensure that everything is on track. Remember to take his input throughout.

Rhonda needs some support in dealing with her father's heart attack. Ask her what you can do for her. Let her know that she is free to go down to the hospital right away. Most organizations allow some time off to deal with situations of this sort; see what you can do to help her out. Tell her she can call in at the end...
