Introducing packages


A package in Configuration Manager contains information about the software that will be installed. The information included in the software package is: name, version, manufacturer, language, and source files. Software packages can be created from a package definition file such as MSI, SMS, or a PDF file, or they can be created manually. Configuration Manager uses the MSI installation file to extract information from it to automatically input the information included in the package. Configuration Manager can create a package if the software doesn't have a package file. It can deploy executables, batch files, VBScript, JavaScript, and command files. Anything that can be executed can be put in a package. Programs on the other hand show the specifics of how the software is executed, and this is an optional part of the package.
