In this chapter, we discussed the difference in characteristics of different types of traffic. We also delved into the impact of the network performance parameters and how these parameters affect different types of traffic. We used these concepts to establish the need for providing differentiated services to the different services on the network.
We discussed the models used for providing QoS on IP networks, and discussed the tools and techniques used for implementing the differentiated services model of QoS. We ended the chapter with configuration samples for implementing QoS in an enterprise network, and also touched upon the impact of a MPLS SP-provided WAN.
