Summary

We have seen that without light, we have no color as the wavelengths contained in white light and their subsequent absorption and reflection from the surface of objects in the real world is the mechanism that brings color to the world around us.

We also noted the importance of the RGB color model as regards color reproduction given that trying to recreate the entire light spectrum inside both hardware and software applications would be problematic and costly to say the least.

And very importantly, we considered some of the typical behaviors seen in real-world surfaces that need to be recreated inside our V-Ray Materials, including:

  • The use of realistic color values to create believable reflectance

  • Reflectivity and the scattering of light to produce blurred reflections

  • Transmissive effects, such as refraction, SSS, and translucency

  • Finally, the importance of energy conservation in materials so that they behave in a physically accurate manner, thus enhancing their photographic quality
