Overview of this book

The book uses step-by-step instructions along with full code listings for each exercise. After each exercise, the author pauses to reflect, explain, and offer insights before building on the project. The author approaches the content with the belief that we are all teachers and that you are reading this book not only because you want to learn, but because you want to share your knowledge with others. Motivated students can pick up this book and teach themselves how to program because the book takes a simple, strategic, and structured approach to learning Scratch. Parents can grasp the fundamentals so that they can guide their children through introductory Scratch programming exercises. It’s perfect for homeschool families. Teachers of all disciplines from computer science to English can quickly get up to speed with Scratch and adapt the projects for use in the classroom.

Chapter 5. Creating a Multimedia Slideshow

If you're like me, you have thousands of photos on your computer hard drive. It's time to dust off a few of these photos for our next project as we will be creating a slideshow with images we import from our computers. To help us personalize our slideshow, we'll incorporate generic sounds and custom recordings into our project.

In this chapter, we will do the following:

  • Import personal photos as backdrops
  • Work with and resize images for use in our projects
  • Add slideshow controls to display images
  • Play and record sounds
  • Locate the x and y coordinates to locate the mouse and hide the navigation controls
  • Display a project in presentation mode

We will start simple with this project and add advanced features as we near the end of the chapter, but the basic slideshow framework should be well within reach of the youngest Scratchers.
