Up to this point, we've focused on understanding operating systems, parsing their artifacts, and using automation to accelerate analysis. These skills allow us to interpret what the system did, but a complete forensic examination requires something deeper: understanding what the user did.
Every investigation ultimately hinges on user behavior. People search the web, create documents, save images, send communications, sync data across accounts, move files between devices, and leave behind thousands of subtle digital traces. Some are intentional; many are accidental. Some are obvious; others are buried inside application data, cloud sync artifacts, or remnants left behind after deletion.
This chapter focuses on those user-driven artifacts. Understanding common user artifacts moves us from tool operation to true investigation, allowing us to more accurately reconstruct behavior, sequence events, and answer the questions that matter most in real-world cases.
