Data acquisition can involve both physical media and cloud-based accounts, and it is the gateway to everything that follows in a digital forensic investigation. The method you choose (physical, logical, or targeted) directly impacts the completeness of your dataset and your ability to recover artifacts such as deleted data. Because acquisition requires interaction with original evidence, it is critical to follow defensible procedures, minimize unnecessary changes, and document every action taken.
Throughout this chapter, you implemented write-blocking, accounted for SSD-specific behavior, acquired data from storage devices and systems with integrated storage, performed logical acquisition of mobile devices, collected data from online accounts, and learned how to use cryptographic hashing for validating acquired data. These processes ensure that acquired evidence is reliable, reproducible, and suitable for further forensic analysis.
