Thumbnails in Linux function much the same as they do within the Microsoft Windows environment; that is, they are generated when the user views icon representations of the file content stored to the system or another volume (such as an attached USB storage drive) and persist even if the original file is moved or deleted. In Linux, however, there are no thumbnail databases and there is no need for third-party tools to view the thumbnail content. Instead, thumbnails are cached as easily viewable .PNG files in a hidden directory for each user account, making it easy to identify the user who viewed the files.
In this recipe, we will examine Linux thumbnail cache files to identify files a user has viewed, including files that may no longer exist on the system.
For this section we will use the Linux forensic image.
Linux per-user thumbnail files can be found at the following location:
{root}/home/username/.cache/thumbnails/
