Student cohorts

Setting up cohorts in a course allows you to create smaller groups of students. This is especially useful in very large courses. Different cohorts of students can have different experiences, including discussions that are limited to members of the same cohort.

A student must be assigned to one cohort, and that student must remain in the same cohort for the duration of a class.

If you decide to configure cohorts in your course, first define a set of cohorts to reflect communities of students, and then select a strategy for assigning students to one of the cohorts you created. Your strategy options include the following:

Automated assignment: This is useful when you have very large enrollment in your courses. The first time a student views the course's Discussion page (or any content-specific discussion topic), they are randomly assigned to an automated cohort.
