Formatting and mounting filesystems

In the previous section, we learned how to logically divide our disk, but that disk is still not usable for storing data. To enable this to do so, we need to define a filesystem on it as the first step to make it available to our system.

A filesystem is a logical structure that defines how files, folders, and more are stored and provides, based on each type, a different set of features.

The number and types of filesystems supported depend on the operating system version, as during its evolution, new filesystems might be added, removed, and more.

Tip
