In this chapter, we covered a general approach to finding files, libraries, and programs, along with the more complex search for CMake packages. You learned how to create an imported package definition if it cannot be found automatically by providing your own find module. We looked at source-code-based dependencies with ExternalProject and FetchContent and how even non-CMake projects can be built using CMake.
Additionally, if you want to become even more sophisticated with your dependency management, we introduced Conan and vcpkg as two package handlers that integrate very well with CMake.
Dependency management is a tough topic to cover and can be tedious at times. Nevertheless, it pays off to take the time to set it up correctly with the techniques described in this chapter.
