Fiber optic cables are quickly replacing copper cables and many areas of modern network infrastructure. Fiber optic cables use light signals to transmit data along a plastic or glass core. Before an end device, such as a server, or networking device, such as a switch, sends data over a fiber optic cable, the NIC of the device is responsible for converting the frame into a signal that can be transmitted over the network media. The NIC uses either a laser or a light-emitting diode (LED) to create light signals that can travel along the core of the fiber optic cable. The cores of fiber optic cables are very fragile and can break very easily if the cable is bent or too much physical pressure is applied to it.
