Creating a custom editor tab in the Content Editor


The Sitecore Content Editor, by default, provides one editor tab—Content—for all items. If you select any Folder item, then we can get one additional tag, Folder, or, when you select any template, we get an additional tab of Template Builder.

Having a custom editor tab can be very useful if you want to show additional information to users. In this recipe, we will create a custom tab, Product Details, which will be visible on selecting any product category item. In this tab, we will show the product information (the Sheer UI application that we created in the previous recipe).

How to do it…

We will first create a custom editor tab:

  1. From the desktop mode, switch to the core database. Open the Content Editor and select /sitecore/Content/Applications/Content Editor/Editors/Items. Create an item Product Listing using the /sitecore/templates/Sitecore Client/Content editor/ Editor template, and fill in the details, as shown in the following image....
