Introduction


So far, we used Sitecore data APIs to fetch item details from the Sitecore content tree. In this chapter, you will learn how we can save selected Sitecore item and field values to Lucene index files and read them. The Sitecore search engine lets you search quickly through millions of items of the content tree with the help of different types of queries with Lucene or Solr indexes.

The recipes in this chapter are concerned with providing different types of searching techniques available today, like Google, for example, indexing content items, searching them based on keywords or phrases with custom conditions, providing facets to refine searches, auto-suggest, similar searches, prioritizing search results, and so on. This chapter also covers techniques to create custom fields with calculated field values. It also explains how easy it is to manage millions of items in Sitecore using an item bucket.
