Environment types
As in F&O, Dataverse has different environment types depending on their purpose. In Dynamics 365 F&O, we have:
- Production environment
- Sandbox environments
- Development environments
One production and one sandbox environment are included with the initial license purchase and are deployed in a Microsoft-owned subscription. You can buy additional sandbox environments, known as add-on sandbox environments. These environments are maintained and serviced by Microsoft.
The F&O development environments are Azure virtual machines deployed in your or your customer’s Azure subscription. The responsibility of maintaining these environments is yours, or your customer’s.
Likewise, in Dataverse, we can have production, sandbox, and developer environments. The purpose of each environment is similar to those of F&O.
