While VSAN continues to increase the scalability, there are hardware limitations with the amount of storage that can be added to server hardware, this specifically holds good with servers, that has very less or no local storage. VSAN 6.0 supports Just a Bunch Of Disks (JBODs). This implies that servers can have externally attached drive enclosures that can participate and contribute storage to a VSAN cluster.
