Switching general concepts

As explained in the preceding section, the working principle of the switch is based mainly on the MAC address table. So, it is not surprising that the very first thing that a switch does on a given computer network is to populate its MAC address table, as soon as possible. From there on, things seem to be simpler to switch.

Ingress and egress ports

In the switching technique, we encounter frames that enter the switch and frames that exit the switch, based on certain rules. Given the multiport structure of the switch, we can naturally conclude that the ports where the frames enter the switch are called incoming ports, and the ports where the frames exit the switch are called outgoing ports.
