We almost all use some form of file management when we're working, whether this is just renaming a file to save it as a backup copy, or using a well-defined directory structure or naming system. More sophisticated version control management systems allow you to manage the changes in your files or documents. This file management becomes more important when multiple users access the same files and is essential as users who share files are often working in different locations and different time zones.
With multiple users accessing the same files, you need a central location for storing the shared files. In many version control systems, files are stored in a repository held on a shared server, with each user checking out the files they need to work on. Once complete, these files are checked in. If another user tries to check in at the same, with their own updated files, the version control system will request a compare and merge before updating the repository...
