The telephone began communication over long distances—in essence, it was the first virtual reality—the ability to have real-time live conversations with persons half a world away. The first digital message was sent about a century later over the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), a forerunner to the Internet. About a quarter century later, the Internet was commercialized. The infrastructure to connect to the Internet was in place as personal computers became standard with fax/modems being able to connect through standard phone lines. Early on, there was BBS (Bulletin Board System)—an online, text-only chat area used primarily for technical topics.
