All content is now driven to the Internet. Any press release, documentation, software program, legal briefing, statistics, or transcript goes on the Web. Nearly all multimedia—video and audio—is streaming across the Web, but what about 3D designs? We see online gaming in massive multiuser environments. But much of that content came off a DVD—the character meshes, scenery, and the code itself. The online data component is quite small, usually just data packets sent among the players to specify one's position and actions.
It seems natural to take 3D models built by architects, mechanical engineers, and animators to the Web. WebGL is an obvious choice—the right technology to display this 3D content. But herein lies the problem of taking content designed for one medium and repurposing it for another. Generally, those 3D models are built for preciseness...
