What Now?

In the movie “The Terminator,” the fictional Cyberdyne Systems, a defense company, has developed a revolutionary new artificial intelligence (AI) computer. Called Skynet, the system is given command over all the computerized military arsenal of the United States, including B-52 stealth bombers and nuclear weaponry.

Capable of learning at an exponential rate, Skynet eventually attains artificial consciousness, which frightens its human operators, who then try to unplug the system. In response, Skynet triggers an attack against Russia, which then retaliates with a counterattack against the United States, and the nuclear exchange results in the catastrophic deaths of more than three billion people.1 Skynet then tries to kill or enslave the surviving humans.
