Preface

Understanding Git, the NetBeans way

The NetBeans IDE provides excellent support for the Git version control client. The IDE's Git support allows you to perform versioning tasks directly from your project within the IDE. You can have the Git repository in two approaches, where the first one takes an existing project or directory and imports it into Git, and the second one clones an existing Git repository from another server computer.

In our upcoming sections, using NetBeans, we will try to initiate a Git repository and learn how to clone a Git repository. To do this, we will create a sample NetBeans project named Chapter6 with the project metadata stored in a separate directory, as we don't need the project metadata under version control, and will practice in the project directory.

Initializing a Git repository

If you are starting to track an existing project in Git, or want your existing project under version control, then you want to initiate the Git repository.
