Animating text as shape objects

Let’s put what we’ve learned into action in a more complex way. Letterforms can be created with the Text tool in Animate and animated with shape tweens after being broken apart into shape objects. The forms can then be animated in shape, color, and more… even using shape modifications to direct the morph.

We’ll create a new project for this exercise. You can close the previous document if you wish… but make sure to save your changes first!

Creating a new document

We’ll once again create an ActionScript 3.0 document for this exercise:

  1. On the home screen, choose File | New or click the Create New button on the welcome screen.
  2. In the New Document dialog that appears, ensure that the Character Animation category is selected.
  3. Locate the preset named HD and select it. It will appear highlighted with a blue border. The sidebar will change to display the details of our chosen preset.
