Georeferencing raster data

According to the online ESRI GIS Dictionary, the georeferencing process converts the coordinates of a raster to a known coordinate system in order to be viewed, queried, and analyzed with other spatial datasets you might have. The raster's Cartesian coordinate system is considered as a source (arbitrary) system The known or reference Cartesian coordinate system is considered as a destination (fixed) system.
