Creating custom symbology

A symbol is composed of one or more graphic layers. Every symbol layer uses a point, line or area symbol, text, and color to represent a geographic feature. A symbol layer has its own graphic characteristics, such as size, color value, hue, texture, orientation, and shape. Depending on the number, order of drawing, size, form, color, offset, or other graphic characteristics, symbol layers overlap to form a single and distinct symbol.

Getting ready

In the next step, you will create standard topographic symbols for a topographic map at the scale 1:5,000. Firstly, you will create a point symbol for the thorny shrub feature, as shown in the following screenshot:

Secondly, you will create a pattern for polygon features from LandUse in accordance with the subtype classification field (CAT).

How to do it...

Follow these steps to create a new point symbol and an area symbol (pattern):

Start ArcMap and open a new map document.
Navigate to Customize | Style Manager | Styles | Add...
