Introduction

Geocoding is the process of converting the address information into spatial data that can be displayed on a map using an address locator. In accordance with the online ESRI GIS Dictionary, an address locator is a dataset that stores the address attributes, associated indexes, and rules that define the process of geocoding.

As an ArcGIS for Desktop user, you can store the address locator in a .loc file format stored in a folder or in an existing geodatabase as Locator. You can also share your address locator with everyone in your organization:

As a locator package (.gpk) format with ArcGIS Online
As a geocode service with ArcGIS for Server

The ESRI GIS Dictionary defines linear referencing as a method for storing geographic data using a relative position along an already existing line feature.
