In the previous recipes, you worked with traditional symbology. In this recipe, you will use advanced techniques to symbolize geographical features on a map. The representation allows you to solve different cartographic challenges, such as the overlapping of different symbols. With multiple representations for the same feature class, you can obtain different thematic maps displayed at different scales while needing only one feature class entry in the Table Of Contents section. The representations are the property of the feature class. In the previous sections, you depended on the .mxd
or .lyr
file to keep the symbology for a feature class on a map. Both types of files save the path to the physical store of the data and the way you choose to symbolize the features.
