Modern Computer Architecture and Organization - Third Edition
By :
Building upon the preceding chapters, this chapter introduced computer architectural features that address domain-specific functional and security requirements. We focused on extensions commonly implemented at the processor instruction set level or in components external to the processor that provide essential capabilities beyond generic computing.
Having completed this chapter, you are familiar with privileged processor modes, how they are used in multiprocessing and multiuser contexts, and the concepts of floating-point processors and their instruction sets. You have a good understanding of techniques for managing power consumption in battery-powered devices. You are aware of standard processor and system features designed to enhance computer system security, as well as some of the more sophisticated techniques attackers have employed to breach those defenses.
The next chapter introduces the processing architecture and unique capabilities of graphics processing units, commonly...
