Autonomous vehicle technology is a rapidly developing field; however, the current state of the art in publicly available vehicles remains far short of the goal of go-anywhere driverless operation. It may be several years before cars become available that can carry passengers on all types of public roads without needing drivers to operate them and monitor their surroundings.
This chapter presented the key capabilities required of self-navigating vehicle processing architectures. It began with an introduction to the levels of driving autonomy and the safety requirements essential to protecting the vehicle's occupants, other road users, nearby people, and other objects. It then explored the various sensors and data sources that a self-driving vehicle relies on while operating.
