The control unit, ALU, and registers work together to fetch, decode, and execute instructions, forming a continuous cycle that transforms input data into computed results while updating the processor's state at the end of each instruction.
Instructions similar to those discussed earlier in this chapter are implemented in most general-purpose processor architectures, though more sophisticated processors augment those capabilities with a variety of enhanced instruction types. Many of the more advanced instructions available in modern processor architectures will be introduced in later chapters.
