Modern Computer Architecture and Organization - Third Edition
By :
In this chapter, the MOS Technology 6502 serves as a vehicle for illustrating fundamental principles of processor architecture. The 6502's register architecture and a small subset of its instructions were covered in Chapter 1, Introducing Computer Architecture. We will build upon that foundation, together with the digital circuits and higher-level components introduced in Chapter 2, Digital Logic, to demonstrate functional units that are universally employed in modern processors, from the tiniest embedded controllers to the most powerful server CPUs.
The integrated circuit at the core of a computer system is referred to by several names, including the Central Processing Unit (CPU), microprocessor, or simply processor. A microprocessor is a single integrated circuit that implements all the functions of a processor. In this book, we will refer to all categories of CPUs and microprocessors as processors.
A processor such as the 6502 contains three logically distinct...
