Building Websites with Microsoft Content Management Server
Caching improves the performance of MCMS. The cache speeds up access to content that has already been requested in the past by storing an offline copy on the MCMS server machine, which saves a trip to the database. MCMS uses two modes of caching:
Local Disk Cache
Memory Cache
The SCA provides the means to configure the location and maximum size of the local disk cache as well as the maximum number of nodes in the memory cache.

Deciding on the actual values is an art in itself and requires much trial and error before settling on the optimum for your site. We discuss both caching techniques and how to derive the cache values in chapter 22. For now, we will simply show you how these values can be configured.
Before we configure the settings, let's review what each setting does.
