Cabling in Ethernet networks

OK, we talked about Ethernet at layer 2 and layer 1, which dealt with cabling, and we even looked at some IEEE 802.3 standards. Now that we have an idea about the cables used in different IEEE 802.3 standards, let's dive in to three main cables that we need to be extremely familiar with:

  • Straight-through cable
  • Crossover cable
  • Rolled cable

These cables are all going to be created using UTP CAT5e cabling. This type of cabling will allow a full duplex environment to go at speeds of 100 Mbps and reach 100 meters.

The abbreviation UTP stands for Unshielded Twisted Pair Cabling. This type of cabling is the most commonly used in any real-world scenario and is what you will be tested on.
