Time for action - moving sections on a page


You probably found the last two exercises to be a breeze. After all, we are almost all the way through the book. By now, you know your way around MediaWiki well enough to make changes by adding a bit of code here and a snippet of wikitext there. So let's tackle something a bit more challenging. Most websites post their search box towards the top of the page. What if we want to go by this standard for our visitors as well? After all, we want them to be comfortable with our site, right? So can we move the search box up to a spot above the navigation box? Well, we are about to find out.

Note

It is important when moving a section to be sure that it does not overlap with any other section on the page. If the section is not moved properly, it may overlap the page layout and render an awful-looking page to your visitors.

  1. 1. Open up the PHP file for the skin you are modifying. We will stick with MonoBook.php for now as we are used to the layout.
