Time for action - uploading the files


Unlike using cPanel, uploading files with an FTP client requires you to extract the mediawiki-*.tar.gz file before you move it to the web server. Use your favorite file archiving tool, such as WinZip or 7-Zip, to extract the files to your computer. Make a note of where they are because in a moment, we are going to start uploading them.

You may be required to create an FTP account on your web server before we get started. If you are unsure how to do this, check with your hosting provider. They should be able to walk you through the steps.

Now that we have extracted the files and our FTP account is ready to go, let's connect our web server with our FTP client and complete the following steps:

  1. 1. In your FTP client, navigate to the folder where you will be installing MediaWiki in the Remote site section. If you want to install it to a subdirectory but haven't created it yet, you can do so now using your FTP client.
