Whether you are creating a public wiki for open contributions, a private wiki for collaborating within your work team or group of friends, or even a wiki for personal use, this book will provide you with all the essential steps you require to achieve this.

This book covers how to administer users, back up and restore content safely, migrate your installation to another server or database, and even make hacks to the code. From the installation process to customizing the pages, you will learn what it takes to run a well designed, secure MediaWiki site.

Throughout the course of this book, you will see the many different ways that MediaWiki can be used on the Web. This book covers the open source MediaWiki wiki engine from installation and getting started through structuring your collaborative web site, advanced formatting, images, and multimedia to migrating your installation and creating new MediWiki templates. File uploading

Before we can do anything with multimedia files, we have to first cover uploading files. If you are familiar with sites such as Wikipedia, you may have seen the Upload file link in the toolbox as shown in the following screenshot:

As your wiki should be open at this point, take a look at the toolbox section of your Main Page. If you have installed MediaWiki according to the directions in this book, our wiki will not have this option yet because we have not enabled our site for file uploading. Let's go ahead and take care of that right now.

Note

The Upload file link will show up in the toolbox of any page on your wiki once it is enabled, not just the Main Page. By default, you will only be able to upload files if you are logged in as a registered user.
