Time for action - backing up the filesystem


Unlike the database, the filesystem does not require any third-party tools to perform the backup. All we need to do is copy selected files from our server using either our FTP program or our file manager.

  1. 1. Navigate to the MediaWiki files and folders on your server using the file manager or FTP program.

  2. 2. Select the files you wish to back up. These usually are:

    • Configuration files such as LocalSettings.php or DefaultSettings.php

    • Folders that contain image files

    • The extensions folder

    • The skins folder

    Any other files or folders that contain important information should be selected as well.

  3. 3. Copy the files/folders to your local computer. It generally helps if you keep all of these files and folders in one folder so they reside in the same place.

  4. 4. Compress the folder that houses everything you copied down from your server.
