A rebate as advertised by an online store is effectively a promise to give the customer a certain amount of money back after the customer has placed an order, has fully paid for the order, and filled in a special rebate claiming form (which can also be used to ask clients some questions about the their satisfaction with the product or service provided, and about their plans to buy certain brands or product types in the future) and sent it to the online store by post or in an electronic format (via email).
Rebates can "trigger" a customer's decision to place an order as they are promised a discount (or a certain amount of money back) once the order is complete. But rebates do not work exactly like simple discount coupons or other discounts. Rebates work better for online merchants and they are actually more profitable than any of the other discounts discussed earlier.
