Technical requirements

Most of the recipes in this chapter are designed to work with Pro Tools Ultimate, although some of the tools’ features will still work with lower versions.

Making coarse-level adjustments with Clip Gain

Clip Gain is a relatively new feature to Pro Tools, although it’s been present in the software for more than 10 years now. While adjusting volume is an important step in the mixing process, there are many situations where you want to adjust a clip’s loudness before it goes through any other part of the signal chain. This is where Clip Gain comes in. We’re going to use Clip Gain to make some coarse adjustments to a clip’s loudness and look at how to manipulate it in different ways.

Getting ready

For this recipe, you’ll need a Pro Tools session with an audio clip on a single track. Clip Gain Info also needs to be enabled. You can do this by going to the menu bar and checking whether View | Clip | Clip Gain Info...
