The first iteration of this standard was introduced in 2006, with the current revision being released in 2015. Before LUFS, other standards relied on a combination of signal playback and sound level pressure meters to ensure that the audio was set to the correct level. The ability to measure an absolute loudness level with the signal alone allows for much more accurate and translatable mixes to be delivered and opens up the ability for delivery to be performed with much more accessible tools.

The beauty of using LUFS as a target for delivery when mixing your work is that you can mix to a loudness level you are comfortable with.
