On RDS, you have the option of running the RDS DB instance in Multi-AZ mode or standalone mode. The Multi-AZ feature of the RDS service allows you to run the standby database in different availability zones which are synchronously replicated. You must have your standby running only in the same region. You cannot have standby running in a different region. AWS automatically fails over to the standby site if any one of the below situations occur. In this case, AWS will automatically switch the CNAME of the DNS record from the primary DB instance to the standby. The following are the situations when AWS fails over to the standby database.
- Primary database instance failure
- Outage in the primary availability zone
- You change the DB instance class of the primary
- Updating software versions
- Patching of the RDS DB instance
- Manual failover initiated
