Helper scripts

CloudFormation provides four helper scripts. These helper scripts can be called directly from your template. These helper scripts are preinstalled on Amazon Linux AMI and are found in /opt/aws/bin. These scripts can be installed on Windows using Python.

  • cfn-init: This helper script can fetch and parse template metadata from templates and use that data to install packages, create and write files to disk, enable/disable, and start/stop services.
  • cfn-signal: This helper script is used to signal back to a stack a success or failure. Once actions are complete, you can signal back their success to the stack. If an action could not be completed, you can signal back its failure to the stack.
  • cfn-hup: This helper script is a daemon that detects changes in resource metadata and then runs actions when a change is detected.
