Intrinsic functions

CloudFormation provides various built-in functions that assist you to manage stacks. These intrinsic functions are very useful for you to capture the values of the resource properties that are not available until runtime. This helps to create customizable templates.

Intrinsic functions are as follows:

  • Fn::Base64: This function returns the Base64 representation of the input string. It is used to pass encoded data to an EC2 instance via the userdata property of the EC2 instance.
Fn::Base64: valueToEncode
  • Fn::FindInMap: It returns the mapping value corresponding to the mapping keys declared in the Mappings section of the CloudFormation template.
Fn::FindInMap: [ MapName, TopLevelKey, SecondLevelKey ]
  • Fn::GetAtt: It returns the value of an attribute from the specified resource in the CloudFormation template.
