Understanding maintenance windows

RDS is a fully managed service. AWS take cares of regular patching and backups as part of this service. It is critical for you to understand how AWS does the regular patching and backups when you work with RDS. Understanding the maintenance schedule will help you minimize the impact on your database workload. Otherwise, you may have no idea why your RDS has intermittent outage. Broadly, there are two types of maintenance windows:

  • Weekly maintenance window: Pay very close attention to the RDS maintenance window. This is something you define at the time of DB instance launch or you can modify it later. AWS uses your preferred maintenance window for software patching and upgrades.
