Summary

Testing is where we really find out what is going on with the software. Before that, it’s easy enough to fake or cover-up. During testing, we get objective results: the software demonstrates errors or it doesn’t. Unless, of course, we do an intentionally poor job, skip testing, or fake results. If you are never faced with a situation where you have an incentive to do the wrong thing, well... you’re more fortunate than most.

In this chapter, we talked about philosophy, which allows us to compare things and come up with our own standards for good, better, and best. From there, we dove into ethics, including how to make difficult decisions under pressure with mismatched incentives. Finally, we talked about hell on earth and how to escape it.

The reality is that most testing involves sitting down in air-conditioned offices where food is plentiful and physical danger is nearly unheard of. We don’t want to discount verbal and emotional abuse, but...
