Beyond Points, Badges, and Leaderboard


Albeit not a thumb rule, all gamification systems have become synonymous with Points, Badges and Leaderboard (PBL). PBL is an integral component of gamification and is definitely a nice ingredient to include in the recipe, but it is not a complete meal to guarantee sustenance by itself. Earning points or badges or topping the leaderboard might become a ritual if they are not attached to concrete end outcomes that the user can relate to.

While the basic strategy would be to accumulate points for redeeming tangibles, the employee might lose interest in due course of time to engage in the activity if the tangible isn't attractive. The badges are a sense of pride, no doubt but again, accumulating the similar badges repeatedly in the kitty is not going to engage the user in the longer run as it does not signify further leveling.

Leaderboard also fails to engage the users in the longer run for varied reasons, such as:
