Color and tonal editing with adjustment layers
The term color is self-explanatory, if not a little vague. After all, there are more than 18 quadrillion known colors. When we need to reference a specific color, such as one used for branding, there is usually an exact CMYK or RGB formula that describes it visually.
As far as editing in Photoshop is concerned, we can increase or decrease the intensity of a color with saturation or boost just low-intensity colors with something called vibrance. A hue is a pure pigment, unaltered by white to create a tint or a shade that darkens a hue by adding black.
Tone is a less commonly used term that means light. Photoshop commonly characterizes light in 256 grayscale steps from pure black to pure white. Regarding RGB, black has a value of 0 (red 0, green 0, blue 0), while white is defined as 255 (red 255, green 255, blue 255).
