Summary
In this chapter, we looked at the multi-faceted challenges of creating branded mock-ups that have to look convincing and legible for either marketing purposes or to further inform decision-making during the design process. In some cases, the mock-up may only need to convey a look or approximation of the final product, but there may also be occasions when the visuals need to feel real and convincing.
To accomplish these challenges, we identified the characteristics that make a suitable source photograph, as well as the scene or scenario within which our prototype will appear.
Then, we applied the methods that are required to match a surface, whether it be a wall, a bottle, or a fabric such as a T-shirt, using Vanishing Point, transforms and warps, and displacement maps. Apart from Vanishing Point, which doesn’t accommodate smart object layers, each technique could be edited, or the source artwork replaced with ease.
