Setting up a Photoshop grid system

Not every project starts with a digital photograph. There are occasions when it is prudent to start with a blank canvas and ensure that you are working to the target output size with all the correct quality settings in place from the get-go, including a grid system and bleed.

Building a new A4 poster document

In this first exercise, we will define document characteristics for a relatively simple, one-page print file that includes bleed, trim guides, and a safe zone for your copy:

  1. Go to File New. When the New Document dialogue appears, click on the Print tab at the top of the dialogue to display a series of page thumbnail presets. Click on the A4 thumbnail. The word Untitled will be highlighted within the Name field on the right-hand side of the dialogue. This will become the file name when saved. Change the name to A4-Poster-01.
