Summary

In this chapter, we have had a comprehensive discussion of the WBS. Starting from the creation of the WBS in the planning phase, we have seen that it plays a vital role in the entire project life cycle. This singular focus on the WBS has been to help us create a Microsoft Project-based schedule that has the highest probability of delivering project success. But there is an aspect of art to WBS management and it involves skillfully getting your whole team involved. As young Goldilocks found in the eponymous story, the decomposition must be neither too little, nor too much, but just right.

In the next chapter, we will get hands-on with a well-formed WBS and convert it into a schedule in Microsoft Project. The chapters so far had simplistic exercises, but from here on in, the examples will begin to get closer to the challenges you will face in professional life.
